Being a freelancer is both the most justifying type of work as well as one of the toughest. No matter what industry you’re in, when you’re on your own everything is in it’s extreme form. You’re either doing amazing or you’re doing terrible, you’re either making a crap ton of money or you’re making none. I think there’s a relatable graph for entrepreneurs that depicts this perfectly, I’ll find it and put it somewhere in this article. Regardless I’m making this article to quite simply help some of you who are either new or need help getting new clients, I’ve gathered 5 of my best tactics that have worked for me, my friends, and my own clients. So let’s get started!

Okay I found the graph and wanted to make sure you saw it first. Sorry for the minor distraction.

Please take note that as a freelancer you’re generally providing some kind of service rather than selling a product. This list is made for those

Okay now, without any further interruption here are my 5 best methods of getting new clients as a freelancer.

  1. Join a networking group- If you’re located in an area with a high population there’s a good chance there are a few networking/referral groups nearby. These groups are great for freelancers because you not only have the chance to get referrals but also meet other freelancers and growing your professional network is super important. (Side note: When going to these groups don’t tell them about how you’re AN app developer, talk about how you’re THE app developer, be better, be different)
  2. Showcase your work- Oh yeah, this is a good one, a big mistake a lot of freelancers make is when they are a tax lawyer for example, they focus every second of their day on tax law stuff. That doesn’t bring in more clients because nobody see’s it. You need to be a tax lawyer AND a media company, make a video on common tax misconceptions for furniture manufacturers. If you don’t like being on video, write an arcticle.
  3. Advertising- Make some valuable, entertaining, or impactful image/video/text and spend some of those dolla dolla bills on getting more people to see it! Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Google, Youtube! These are all platforms that your prospects are going everyday! Make sure they see that content you made!
  4. Networking Meetups- Okay so this one is a major one that is severely underrated. Just like in number 1, meeting other freelancers and business and putting them in your network of people you interact with is CRUCIAL. Luckily for you, there are event’s practically every night in most cities where you can attend and meet handfuls of business people. Now a big mistake so many people make at these events is they go and give everyone their card while saying “If you need accounting services, send me an email” and then repeat to each person there. You need to build trust and some kind of impact with the people there. I like to do something different within my networking to give them something to remember me by so I use an app called Rapid Square Cards which is basically a digital business card that saves your information into a prospects phone when they scan a QR code with their camera. It may sound like a lot of work just to exchange information but 9/10 times that I’ve done this the response was “Oh sh*t that’s cool” and now when I text them the next day, they know who its from. (I’ll link it at the bottom of the article, It’s a pretty game changing app)
  5. Focus on 1 person- Maybe in person meetups aren’t your thing and you don’t have the money to spend on ads. You’re going to have to spend time and effort on organically getting in touch with someone to really secure them. Go on LinkedIn, find someone who you want desperately as a client. The rest of your day should be focused on connecting and talking with that one person. So send the a connection request, go to their website to get their email, send an email, call their office, send a dozen donuts and a note introducing yourself. Whatever it takes!

These are 5 ways to get clients in 2019, hopefully with the help of this article, 12 months from now you’ll be making significantly more dolla dolla bills.
